This original scripture meditation series is an exploration of the nature of “call.” It was created by Convergence for our Spiritual Collectives series, “On Calling.”
“You have created us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”
St. Augustine of Hippo, 4th Century African Bishop
You are invited to pause, breathe deep and listen for the still, small voice.
Imagine yourself in a quiet safe place where all the competing voices of the world both external and internal are quiet. Now, in the still small part of you, can you hear the Voice calling? The summons? The call of the soul? That little voice that won’t leave you alone. The one that tells you, you are meant for something more?
Pause now to breathe deeply and consider the words of Psalm 50: 1-3a (NAB/The Voice)
The God of gods, the Lord, the Eternal—God of past, present, and future— has spoken over the world and summoned together all things from the rising of the sun to its setting… Our God comes and will not be silent!
We get the words “calling” or “vocation” from the Latin word vocacio meaning, “summons” which in turn comes from vocare meaning “to call.” A vocation: a call, is no mere job or task. You are called; you are summoned by an eternal voice. One that existed before time began, speaking all of creation into being. And that voice beckons to something deep in each of us and we long to follow. St. Augustine wrote, “You have created us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”
Is your heart restless? Do you hear that voice calling deep from within? As you listen to the passage again, Listen… Listen for the call.
The God of gods, the Lord, the Eternal—God of past, present, and future— has spoken over the world and summoned together all things from the rising of the sun to its setting… Our God comes and will not be silent!
And now, inspired by Augustine’s words I pray – “Loving Jesus, Word Made Flesh, tune my ears to hear your call. You are my end, it is to you that I am journeying. And it is only when I have arrived there that my desire will be fulfilled. You are my home. Help me to hear and know your voice as you call out to my restless heart – “I am the way and to me you come.”
